Military Affairs & Programs

Known as the "Best Hometown in the Air Force," Montgomery is the site of Maxwell Air Force Base and Gunter AnnexThe city's aviation history can be traced to 1910 when the Chamber recruited the Wright brothers to locate their first School for Powered Flight on a field that would eventually become home to Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base.

There is a special bond between Maxwell-Gunter and Montgomery. For decades the men, women and families serving at the base have enriched the River Region as neighbors, volunteers and civic leaders. The Chamber, elected officials and community leaders take every opportunity to express gratitude to these heroes for the contributions they make to our community and for their service to our nation. Below are a few of many initiatives the Chamber leads to support our service members and make them feel at home during their time in Montgomery.

  • Freedom Park: To show appreciation for the sacrifices made by service members and their families, the Chamber led a community-wide initiative to build a park on Maxwell Air Force Base. Freedom Park is a place military families will enjoy for years to come.  Watch the Freedom Park ribbon cutting ceremony.
  • Montgomery Chamber and Air University Golf Challenge: A fun and friendly rivalry held to strengthen the relationship among business, community and Air Force leadership.
  • Military Salute at Riverwalk Stadium: Military families enjoy an exciting night of Montgomery Biscuits Baseball hosted by the Chamber and business and elected leaders.
  • Military Family Appreciation Day at the Zoo: Active duty and retired military personnel and their families enjoy a complimentary lunch and day at the zoo hosted by the Chamber.
  • "Freedom Isn't Free" Military Appreciation Week: Held annually in conjunction with Veterans Day, this patriotic tribute rallies area businesses to show support for military personnel and their families by providing special offers and discounts.
  • Wright Flyer Annual Meeting: Community, business and military leaders are provided an overview of appreciation and support programs for military members stationed at Maxwell-Gunter.
