    Two utilities provide electricity to Montgomery and surrounding areas: Alabama Power Company and PowerSouth Energy Cooperative.

    Amazing Alabama, an Alabama Power Company investor-owned affiliate of Southern Company, is one of the nation’s largest producers of electricity. Alabama Power provides service to 1.4 million homes, businesses and industries in the southern two-thirds of Alabama. More than 78,000 miles of power lines carry electricity to customers throughout 44,500 square miles. Alabama Power is one of four U.S. utilities operated by Southern Company and is its second largest subsidiary.

    PowerSouth is a generation and transmission (G&T) cooperative providing the wholesale power needs of 20 distribution members that include 16 electric cooperatives and four municipal electric systems in Alabama and northwest Florida. With combined generating capacity of more than 2,000 megawatts, PowerSouth owns and operates six generation facilities and holds ownership interest in an additional facility. PowerSouth maintains long-term purchased power agreements to ensure economic and reliable power supply for members.

    Alabama territorial regulations set forth service area for power loads under 2,500 kilowatts; more than 2,500 kilowatts new loads become competitive.

    Natural Gas

    Spire Energy serves 1.7 million customers across Alabama, Mississippi and Missouri. Spire’s gas marketing business maintains the balance between natural gas supplies and customers’ needs, ensuring the highest reliability at the lowest costs.

    Southeast Gas was created in 1952 as a vehicle for driving economic development in the southeast quadrant of Alabama. Southeast Gas is owned by 14 cities committed to the region’s growth and success. In addition to owner cities, Southeast Gas serves 19 other communities through more than 600 miles of transmission lines and more than 1,400 miles of distribution lines that deliver service to 30,000 customers. Southeast Gas' footprint spans more than 12,000 square miles and reaches a population in excess of 900,000.

    Water/Sewer

    The Montgomery Water Works and Sanitary Sewer Board supplies water to the area. The major surface water supply is the Tallapoosa River augmented by large underground quantities of water. The purification plant has a capacity of 60 million gallons per day (mgd). Groundwater wells provide an additional capacity of 31.8 mgd, giving Montgomery a current capacity of 91.8 mgd. Average daily consumption is approximately 33 mgd. Pressure averages 60-70 pounds per square inch.

    Sanitary sewer is collected and treated by the Montgomery Water Works and Sanitary Sewer Board in three water pollution control plants. These provide complete primary and secondary treatment using primary filters, biological trickling filters, synthetic biofilters, or activated sludge and secondary filtration. The effluent is dispersed into the Alabama River.

    Average Daily Consumption: 39 mgd

    Telecommunications

    AT&TCenturyLinkConverged NetworksSpectrum Business EnterpriseWOW!, and other major telecommunications companies have made a large investment in the Montgomery area telecommunications technology network.  This includes digital switching, fiber optics, self-healing architecture, Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) and Synchronous Optical Networking (SONET) which will support Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) service.
