Montgomery, AL (July 20, 2023) – The White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence and Economic Opportunity through Historically Black Colleges and Universities (Initiative) has announced the selection of two Trenholm State Community College students to participate in the 2023 HBCU Scholar Recognition Program.
The HBCU Scholar Recognition Program highlights a diverse group of student leaders with a unique combination of academic achievements, campus leadership, and civic engagement and further empowers them with tools for excellence.
Thaddeus Sneed, a CIS major, and Matilda Perryman, a Culinary Arts major, both from Montgomery, Alabama have been selected to represent Trenholm State Community College. For this cohort, there are 102 HBCU students from 70 HBCUs making this the largest cohort to date.
“Trenholm State Community College is honored to have two of our students selected for this program. We are extremely excited for Thaddeus and Matilda and for the numerous opportunities and resources that this program will afford to them,” states Dr. Kemba Chambers, President, Trenholm State Community College. “Participating in the HBCU Scholars Program will open doors to many opportunities, including internships, resources, mentorships, and networking opportunities which allow our students to connect with professionals in their field of interest and build a network of like-minded individuals, while offering guidance and support to help them navigate their academic journey and maximize their potential."
The selected students will serve as student ambassadors for the Initiative and Trenholm State. In addition, they will participate in monthly master classes, and the students will receive an invitation to attend the 2023 Annual National HBCU Week Conference, in September, designed to help them learn and adopt promising practices in areas such as leadership, professional development, HBCU excellence and workforce development.
