Federal Security Directive Requiring Masks Will Prevail

(Montgomery, AL) – Effective as of February 1, 2021, the TSA has mandated that masks must be worn by all persons while on airport grounds, with the exception of people with disabilities who cannot wear a mask as defined by the American Disabilities Act.

On April 9, to ensure full compliance with the federal security directive (SD 1542-21-01) issued by the Department of Homeland Security and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), passengers and guests will be required to wear masks at all times on airport property, including all outside areas. Passengers will also be required to continue to wear masks on commercial aircraft.

The TSA directive defines a mask as material covering the nose and mouth of the wearer, excluding face shields. It further states, “Federal law requires wearing a mask at all times in and on the airport and failure to comply may result in removal and denial of re-entry. Refusing to wear a mask in or on the airport is a violation of federal law; individuals may be subject to penalties under federal law.”

Persons refusing to wear a mask will be fined by the TSA or asked to leave the premises by Airport Police if found not to be in compliance with the federal mask order.

Executive Airport Director Marshall J. Taggart, Jr said, “MGM officials will utilize clear signage, overhead announcements, and communication with airport staff to remind customers of the mask requirement.  Masks are available at the information desk, at no charge, for any passenger or guest needing a face covering.”
