At first glance, Atlanta and Montgomery might not have much in common. About 160 miles away, the Alabama capital has just over 200,000 people, and is decidedly compact. And while ATL has always had a striving eye on a cosmopolitan future, Montgomery is often regarded in terms of the past; it's the former capital of the Confederacy, and it played a huge part in the Civil Rights Movement a century after that failed rebellion. In fact, that's where the ATL-MGM link becomes clear — our most famous son, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., got his start preaching in Montgomery, and Atlanta leaders of today like Rep. John Lewis were integral in that fight in the 1960s.
