    The Alabama Department of Commerce recently announced that Montgomery ranked #1 in announced new projects among all Alabama counties. Additionally, Montgomery ranked #2 in announced total new and expanding projects, and #3 in announced total new and expanding jobs. Montgomery has consistently ranked among the top 3 counties in Alabama in new and expanding industry announcements since 2010.

    U.S. News and World Report ranks Loveless Academic Magnet Program High School, Brewbaker Technology Magnet High School and Booker T. Washington Magnet High School the #1, #9, and #21 high school in Alabama, respectively.

    Hyundai Power Transformers USA, Inc. (HPT) announced a $33 million expansion of its Montgomery facility resulting in the creation of 86 new jobs. The expansion will enable the company to establish a “Smart Factory” and will increase production of its power transformers by more than 60 percent. The expansion will include a newly-constructed training facility that will contribute to fostering an advanced labor force, taking the company one step closer to achieving its plan of generating $200 million in revenue by 2021.

    Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama LLC (HMMA) announced plans to invest $388 million to construct a plant dedicated to manufacturing engine heads and to enhance existing operations and support production of new models of Sonata and Elantra sedans. The investment will create 50 new jobs. HMMA is preparing for the next-generation Theta II engine, which requires new technologies and components as a part of its assembly process.

     

    2017 Rankings, Accolades And Announcements

    The United States Air Force selected Montgomery’s 187th Fighter Wing, located at Dannelly Field, as one of two U.S. sites to serve as the next strategic location for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter jet and to support the Air Force’s worldwide placement of fighter jets. The receipt of the F-35 ensures the stability of the 187th Fighter Wing’s mission, as well as the future of the Alabama Air National Guard, for decades to come. It represents more than $60 million in military construction projects that will be bid to local and state contractors and the preservation of more than 1,000 jobs.

    Montgomery leaders have announced an upgrade to the capacity of Montgomery’s Internet Exchange to handle 100 Gigabits per second of traffic. The MGMix is the State’s only internet exchange. In related news, CoWerx46, a developer-centered co-working space located in downtown Montgomery, will officially open summer 2017.

    In the 2016 New and Expanded Industries Report recently released by the Alabama Department of Commerce, Montgomery led every other county in the state for announced jobs by new and expanding industries, with 1,704 jobs announced last year. Also highlighted in the report, Montgomery ranked second in terms of the number of economic development projects announced last year with a total of 42, and fourth in terms of the new capital investment those announcements generated, at $371 million.

    The City of Montgomery has launched Open Data Montgomery, a platform to foster greater accountability, accessibility and transparency within local government. Information accessible on the site includes: interactive maps and charts, construction permits, demolitions, paving projects, 311 calls, and crime reports.

    Local call center company, ASK, will invest $2 million in the renovation of a former bowling alley. ASK plans to add 300 employees, nearly doubling their payroll.

    Southern Business & Development magazine named Montgomery a Best Data Center Location in the Mid-South and Best Mid-Market in the Mid-South for the Automotive Industry.

    Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama will invest $52 million to begin producing the Santa Fe Sport at the Montgomery manufacturing facility, where Sonata and Elantra sedans are now made.

    The City of Montgomery, Montgomery County, State of Alabama, Maxwell/Gunter Air Force Base and Cyber College of the Air Force have aligned to form the Montgomery Cyber Connection. Defense, public and private partners have created the state’s first internet exchange – one of only four in the Southeast.

    The Montgomery Preparatory Academy for Career Technologies has opened its doors to 450 high school students.  Students can graduate high school with industry certifications and two-year college credits through dual enrollment.

    German automotive supplier Gerhardi Kunststofftechnki GmbH announced that it has selected Montgomery for the location of its first North American facility. The company will invest $37.9 million and employ 235 workers.

    LAMP High School was named the best high school in the state, and BTW Magnet High School is ranked second, according to U.S. News and World Report’s Best High School rankings.

    Montgomery is Alabama’s Best Run City, according to findings from WalletHub, a personal finance website dedicated to empowering consumers. Performance indicators included financial stability, education, health, safety, and economy as well as infrastructure and pollution.

    SmartAsset, a personal finance technology company, ranked Montgomery County as one of the Highest Places in the State for Incoming Investment. The rankings were based on business establishment growth, GDP growth, new building permits, and municipal bond investment.

    The City of Montgomery was presented the Altus Trophy by the Altus, Oklahoma Chamber of Commerce. The Altus Trophy, also known as the Air Education and Training Command Community Support Award, is presented annually to a community judged to have shown the most outstanding support to an AETC base.

    Montgomery is home to four of the Top 10 global automotive suppliers, according to Automotive News.
