Montgomery native Carolyn Crowder is screening her 30 minute documentary Chris' Hot Dogs: Montgomery, Alabama on Saturday 8/8/26  at 4pm at the Capri Theatre as part of the Montgomery Film Festival.  

 

 

What:

 

Chris’ Hot Dogs Stand has been an oasis in downtown Montgomery, Alabama for 108 years and counting, serving whoever walks through the door. It was opened by a Greek immigrant, Chris Katechis, who knew no bigotry, hiring and serving Black people and bucking the rigid system of segregation when it was dangerous to do so. The 30-minute documentary was directed by Montgomery native Carolyn Crowder who has been going to Chris’s all of her life. The film is told through Chris' Hot Dog customers, staff and members of the Katechis family.  The film also highlights Chris' longtime (47 years and counting) waitress Eleanor Williams.  The screening at the Montgomery Film Festival is the documentary's premiere.  

 

 

Who:

Carolyn Crowder, Ph.D. is a retired psychologist who specialized in parent education and published three parenting books, one of which was a NY Times national bestseller. She appeared on Today, 20/20, Dateline, and NPR.

She has produced four documentaries: AT THE RIVER: STRUGGLE AND GRACE IN THE SEGREGATED SOUTH (on Amazon Prime)  is a feature doc about Southern Presbyterian ministers who stood tall during the Civil Rights era in the deep South despite the dangers they faced. SISTER DON’T WEEP (Western Media Art Fellowship) is an art piece about being raised Southern and female; SOMEWHERE TO LAY MY HEAD tells the history of a Southern Black community in rural Arizona, and RUBY, is an exploration of the life of Ruby Prevo who worked as a maid for the Crowder family for over 25 years.

Crowder's latest short doc, CHRIS' HOT DOGS: MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA, documents a hot dog stand in Montgomery Alabama that she has been going to all her life and the risks the Greek-American founder took on race during the Civil Rights era and beyond.
