MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Following the ribbon cutting at Cloverdale Park, the City of Montgomery announced the next phase of playground installations that will bring modern play structures to neighborhoods across the community.

In total, more than $930,000 has been invested in new playgrounds through a combination of City Council discretionary funds, grants, federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, and an additional $180,000 allocated by the City’s Parks and Recreation Department.

The City also partnered with GameTime, a national leader in playground equipment, which matched the City’s funding through its nationwide grant program. The program helps communities leverage local investments by providing matching dollars for playgrounds and recreation facilities — effectively doubling the impact of Montgomery’s commitment to its neighborhoods.

“These new playgrounds are about more than slides and swings – they’re about strengthening neighborhoods and providing our young people with safe spaces to grow, connect, and thrive,” said Mayor Steven L. Reed.

The City has already completed new playground installations at Cloverdale Park (District 7) and Southlawn Park (District 4). In addition, Jackson Ferry Road Park (District 3) is nearly complete and will soon open for children and families to enjoy.

Officials announced that 12 more playgrounds are scheduled for installation in the coming months:
    • Twin Gates Park, District 4
    • Hyde Park, District 2
    • Louis Armstrong Park, District 3
    • Peter Crump Park, District 6
    • Woodcrest Park, District 4
    • Forest Hills Park, District 1
    • Fox Hollow Park, District 1
    • Hunter Station Park, District 4
    • Newtown Park, District 3
    • Pecan Grove Park, District 2
    • Western Hills Park, District 4
    • Exchange Club Park, District 2

District 7 Councilor Andrew Szymanski, who represents Cloverdale-Idlewild, said he has already seen the excitement in his community since the playground opened.

“Families in Cloverdale-Idlewild and across Montgomery deserve safe, modern spaces where children can play and grow. Investments like this make an immediate difference, and I’m proud to work with my colleagues and Mayor Reed to make sure these opportunities reach every corner of our city.”

Councilor Franetta Riley, who represents District 4, added: “Southlawn and the other parks in District 4 are already seeing new life with these investments. Playgrounds bring families together and give children the kind of safe, positive spaces they deserve. I’m grateful to the Mayor, my colleagues, and our partners for making this possible.”

Councilor Marche Johnson, who represents District 3, said the improvements are already having an impact.

“Playgrounds are a lifeline for our communities. They are where we restore the youthfulness, playfulness, and family-oriented environment we strive for as a city. Investing in these spaces is a direct investment in our children and a visible commitment to their well-being. Every community deserves this investment, and I will continue to advocate for resources to ensure our neighborhoods have places where our children can thrive and our communities can flourish.”

The City confirmed that additional playground projects are planned beyond this phase as officials and councilmembers continue to direct resources into neighborhood parks.
