Montgomery, AL – Huntingdon College President Anthony Leigh announced today the approval of a new undergraduate major in Government. The pre-professional major, designed by a team of faculty members, will provide students with a broad overview of American and international features of government, preparing students for careers in law, public service, international relations, or non-governmental organization administration. The new major reflects Huntingdon College's commitment to preparing students for meaningful leadership and civic engagement in a global and complex world.

"Huntingdon's location in the backyard of the Alabama State Capitol makes this a perfect place for politically-interested students and legal-minded scholars to study, to gain internships, and to build professional networks with state and federal leaders," said President Leigh. "Capitol Hill in both Washington, D.C. and Montgomery are dotted with Huntingdon alumni applying wisdom in service, whether in legislative halls, the executive branch, or judicial spaces across the southeast. Each semester, a number of Huntingdon students secure internships working in state government and for trade associations headquartered in Montgomery, and I expect their presence in political and policy circles to grow as we attract aspiring government scholars to our campus."

Dr. Stephanie L. Kirschmann, Huntingdon's Vice President for Academic Affairs, lauded the faculty for their work to create new classes and a new major with a pre-professional focus. "I am grateful for our faculty's leadership in designing a curriculum that addresses the most pressing issues in modern world politics. By integrating new courses in globalization and international relations with a versatile selection of electives, they have created a pathway that directly prepares our students for the complexities of careers in government, law, NGO administration, and international relations."

Current and new students will be able to declare the government major and begin coursework in Fall 2026.
