MONTGOMERY, AL — Downtown Montgomery is gearing up for a new wave of investment and energy. Through the City’s Storefront Improvement Grant Program, seven local businesses have been awarded matching funds to upgrade their façades, modernize interiors, and make improvements that strengthen the city’s growing sense of place.

Administered by the Department of Community & Economic Development through its ACCESS Montgomery initiative, the program provides up to $15,000 in 50-percent matching grants to help small business owners reinvest in their spaces. From fresh paint and improved signage to new HVAC systems and energy-efficient windows, these projects will help revitalize one of Montgomery’s most active commercial corridors.

“These grants not only beautify our city center, they strengthen the backbone of Montgomery’s small-business community,” said Frank Robinson, Director of Economic Development. “Our intent is to partner with entrepreneurs who have demonstrated commitment to the city, and to make sure every public dollar spent helps attract more foot traffic, more jobs, and more momentum downtown.”

Awardees include a mix of established and emerging businesses that contribute to downtown’s food, service, and place-making landscape:

23 Court Cigar Bar & Bistro

    Eugene’s Hot Chicken

    Dreamland BBQ

    Jesus City Church

    Paradigm Lounge

Capitol City Bicycle Repair & Service

Each business met the City’s eligibility requirements—holding valid business licenses, proof of insurance, and the ability to provide the required 50-percent financial match. Applications were evaluated through a transparent process that prioritized readiness, community impact, and contribution to downtown’s economic vitality.

While renovations are still underway, many projects are already in motion. For example, Capitol City Bicycle Repair & Service plans to install a full HVAC system and complete storefront painting and curbside updates as part of its revitalization project.

“This support gives us the chance to finally make improvements that have been on our wish list for years,” said Jeff Feet, owner of Capitol City Bicycle Repair & Service. “From upgrading the HVAC system to revitalizing our storefront, this investment helps us better serve customers and add to the energy that’s building in downtown Montgomery.”

Launched as a pilot initiative, the Storefront Improvement Grant demonstrates how targeted investments can accelerate commercial revitalization. Building on this early success, city officials plan to expand the program to other business corridors across Montgomery as additional funding becomes available—ensuring more local entrepreneurs can benefit from similar opportunities.

As the projects unfold over the coming months, the improvements will represent more than a physical transformation. Each enhanced storefront reflects the city’s growing momentum—one that celebrates its character, supports its people, and continues to build a more vibrant Montgomery for generations to come.
