MONTGOMERY, AL — In continued celebration of Montgomery’s designation as a Regional Veterans Day Site by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the Montgomery Military and Veterans Commission is proud to host a Women Veterans Panel on Thursday, November 13, 2025, at the Armory Learning Arts Center.

Themed “Military Women: Then and Now — A Time of Unity,” this powerful event will bring together a multigenerational panel of women who have served across eras and branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. From trailblazers of the Vietnam era to today’s active-duty leaders, these women represent courage, resilience, and the evolving role of women in military service.

    Meet the Panelists

    • Ms. Jackie Ward, U.S. Army – Vietnam Era Veteran, first woman assigned to her unit.
    • Ms. Nancy Burtron, U.S. Marine Corps – Vietnam Era Veteran and USMC Chapter Leader
    • Dr. Kittra Owens, U.S. Navy – Veterans Affairs Physician
    • Ms. Sandra Lucas, U.S. Navy – Deputy Commissioner, Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs
    • Ms. Marche Johnson, U.S. Army – Iraq/Afghanistan War Veteran and Montgomery City Councilor
    • Capt. Olivia Durrence, U.S. Air Force – Active-Duty Intelligence Officer
    • CMSgt Mataya Williams, Air National Guard, 187th Fighter Wing – Command Chief Master Sergeant

This event is more than a panel—it’s a moment of connection, reflection, and recognition. It offers a rare opportunity to hear firsthand from women whose service has often gone unrecognized, and to celebrate their contributions to our nation’s defense.

This panel is a tribute to the strength and unity of women in uniform—past and present. It’s also a call to the community to listen, learn, and support the women who have served with distinction. Whether you’re a veteran, a student, or a citizen who values service, your presence will help honor these remarkable women and the legacy they represent.
