  • Montgomery Emergency Management Agency Provides Storm Response and Power Outage Update

Montgomery, Ala. — [6:00 PM] The City of Montgomery continues to respond to storm-related impacts affecting power, transportation, and public safety across the city.

As of this afternoon, more than 8,000 Alabama Power customers remain without electricity in multiple areas of Montgomery. City officials are working closely with Alabama Power, ALDOT, Spectrum, Montgomery Police Department, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, and emergency management partners to address outages and maintain public safety.

The most significant issue at this time is downed power lines across Interstate 85 near Eastern Boulevard, which has resulted in a full interstate closure. Crews are actively working to stabilize damaged infrastructure, and the interstate is expected to remain closed for an additional 12–14 hours, potentially reopening tomorrow.

Detours are currently in place, and motorists are urged to avoid the I-85/Eastern Boulevard area and follow the direction of law enforcement officers and posted signage.

City officials remain in constant communication with Alabama Power, which anticipates stabilizing a damaged utility pole around 1:00 a.m., allowing crews to begin rehanging power lines. Restoration timelines will vary depending on location and conditions.

Residents who need to report non-emergency storm-related issues, such as downed trees, power lines, and flooding, should call 311.

Please call 911 only for emergencies and injuries.

    Community Support

For residents without power or heat, the City is opening a warming center at the Crump Community Center at 7 p.m., which will remain available tonight, closing at 11 a.m. on Monday. If demand increases, the City is prepared to expand operations within the facility. At this time, this is the only warming center operating countywide.

    Public Guidance

    • Avoid travel near I-85 and Eastern Boulevard
    • Report non-emergency storm-related issues (downed trees, power lines) by calling 311
    • Call 911 only for emergencies or injuries

The City will continue to provide updates on social media as conditions change.
