Family-Friendly Taproom Aims to be Community Gathering Space

[MONTGOMERY, AL] April 12, 2018—For months, traffic passing by 424 Bibb Street in downtown Montgomery has seen a bustle of activity and lights on late into the night in the former home of Lowe’s Auto Parts. This Saturday, April 14, residents can finally satisfy their curiosity about the project and are invited to stop in and see the transformation that has taken place in the 72-year old building. Common Bond Brewers will be officially opening its doors to the public from noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday, with regular hours to begin next Thursday, April 19 (Thursday, 4-10p.m.; Fridays & Saturday, noon to 10 p.m.). The taproom is family friendly, with board games inside and corn hole outside and lots of room on its back and front patios for catching-up with friends and neighbors over a pint or a tasting flight. For the grand opening, the brewery will have its flagship four beers—a rye amber, a blonde ale, an IPA and a pale ale—available on tap or to carry out in 32 oz. cans or 64 oz. glass growlers.

Founded by Montgomery residents Andrew McNally and Tim Doles, Common Bond is the city’s only production brewery. Inspired by the way that relationships can be forged over a few shared pints, McNally and Doles envision Common Bond as a place where people can connect with each other and with their community. By selecting a downtown location near a number of important historical and cultural sites, they wanted to demonstrate their commitment to Common Bond playing an active part in the ongoing revitalization of the downtown business and entertainment district. In addition, the brewery’s location directly off of exit 172 on I-65 will be a convenient draw to bring regional tourists and interstate travelers to Montgomery.

As part of that commitment to the community, McNally and Doles have started establishing partnerships with local business owners—like Chip and Laura Spencer of Spencer farms in Marion Junction—and they’re looking for other ways to expand on this same idea, such as sourcing local ingredients for their beer offerings, collaborating with area restaurants and chefs and creating an event schedule that offers new opportunities for residents to come downtown and (re)discover all that the city has to offer.

When asked what prompted him to open Common Bond, McNally explains, “I really enjoy the way good beer gathers people together and it’s very satisfying to see that actually happening here in our taproom.”

Doles agrees, adding that, “Our goal is to give tri-county residents a beer to call their own and a space for the community to gather.”
