    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Montgomery Chamber’s 145th Annual Meeting Focuses on Strategic Gains, Places Education as Top Priority for Future.

Interim State Education Superintendent Ed Richardson to give keynote address: “Great Cities Demand Great Schools”

Montgomery, AL, December 7 – The Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce’s 145th Annual Meeting today will bring together hundreds of the city’s business community along with elected leadership to celebrate this year’s strategic successes and set the path for future growth firmly on the improvement of public education system with a powerful keynote address by Dr. Ed Richardson, Alabama’s interim education superintendent.

The Chamber’s efforts have produced a number of significant milestones this year that are moving Montgomery’s economic development strategy forward, including:

    • Direct Air Service from Montgomery to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport starting in June of 2018.

    • Montgomery named number one in new and announced jobs for 2016 by the Alabama Department of Commerce.

    • The launch of Montgomery’s Technology strategy (TechMGM). TechMGM has created technology workforce training in partnership with local educational institutions, leveraged the Air Force Information Technology and Cyber Power Conference to continue to strengthen the partnership between the business community and the Air Force and introduced major technology companies to the Montgomery Internet Exchange (MGMix). In addition, the growth of the MGMix to 100 Gig Capacity has boosted the competitive advantage Montgomery now offers to data-intensive companies.

The community-wide support of the effort to win the F-35 Lighting II mission for the 187th Fighter Wing of the Alabama Air National Guard, based at Dannelly Field. The combined efforts and support of the business community, elected leadership and citizens rang out loudly and clearly to the Air Force and the men and women of the 187th. A decision is expected at any time.

To keep this momentum growing, the Chamber’s board has set its sights for 2018 firmly on the improvement of public education, and the keynote address by Dr. Richardson will focus on the vision for this pivotal opportunity for Montgomery.

“There is truly no greater issue impacting Montgomery today than the health of our public schools and the students and families they serve. The state intervention presents a tremendous opportunity to move forward and the time to take action is now,” said Chairman David Reed.

At the close of today’s meeting, outgoing Chairman David Reed will pass the gavel to incoming Chairman Judge Charles Price (Retired).
