Montgomery, AL – October 31, 2024 – Today, the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce hosted a State of Schools event to provide key updates on Montgomery Public Schools (MPS) and discuss collaborative steps toward sustaining the district's progress. This gathering, organized with the support of business and elected leaders, follows a month marked by leadership transitions in MPS, including the departure of former Superintendent Dr. Melvin Brown. Leaders across the community joined to reaffirm their commitment to maintaining the positive momentum in Montgomery’s educational system. While the Chamber had previously urged the board to retain Dr. Brown, we also pledged continued partnership in aiding the district’s leadership transition.

“The Chamber partnership believes Montgomery Public Schools has achieved too much progress to slow down now,” said Caryn Hughes. “We support the board’s move to keep the district’s turnaround on track and fully endorse the selection of Jamie Wilson as Interim Superintendent, whose dedication and leadership have already been a key asset to MPS.”

Jamie Wilson, now serving as Interim MPS Superintendent, brings a distinguished background in educational leadership. Formerly the Chief of Staff for MPS, Ms. Wilson has been instrumental in the district's strategic improvements. Her career spans 18 years, including experience as Director of Human Resources for Reynoldsburg, OH, Middle School Principal, and teacher in the Chicago area. She holds a B.S. in Education from Northern Illinois University, an M.A. in Educational Administration from Governors State University, and completed the Superintendent Licensure Program at Ohio State University.

At today’s event, Ms. Wilson shared updates on the school district’s ongoing initiatives, highlighting the district’s mission that underscores partnerships with families and the community. “Montgomery Public Schools is committed to creating unique opportunities that allow our children to thrive academically, socially, and beyond the classroom,” Ms. Wilson stated. “Our strategic plan is designed to equip all students with the skills needed to succeed in a global society.”

Board of Education President Dr. Brenda Coleman closed the event, expressing gratitude for the unwavering support of the Montgomery community and reaffirming the board’s commitment to intentional, purposeful progress. Standing alongside three of her board colleagues (Vice President Cassandra Brown, Pamela Cloud, and Claudia Mitchell), she shared, “We have a plan to move forward, and we thank you for the trust and confidence you have placed in us. Together, we are building a brighter future for all students in Montgomery Public Schools.”

The Montgomery Chamber remains steadfast in its support of the MPS Board of Education, standing united in prioritizing the educational progress of Montgomery and nurturing future leaders. With a commitment to active engagement and community input, we are eager to build on solid leadership, expand our capacity, and renew our pledge to advancing public education. Together, we are stronger, united in purpose, and dedicated to meaningful solutions for our schools and our community.
