Wind Creek launches free WiFi network in downtown Montgomery

WiFi access points from Riverwalk Stadium to Commerce Street will go live in coming weeks

MONTGOMERY – Visitors, residents and businesses in downtown Montgomery will now have access to free, high speed WiFi thanks to a partnership between Wind Creek Hospitality, the Riverfront Foundation and the City of Montgomery.

“This is a win-win situation and another perfect example of how we can partner with our great neighbors like Wind Creek Hospitality to make Montgomery an even better place to live, work and play,” Mayor Strange said. “Whether it’s building Alabama’s first Internet exchange or launching free downtown WiFi, public-private partnerships are playing a huge role in spurring growth and inspiring innovation in Montgomery, along with enhancing our overall quality of place.”

Made possible through technology from Montgomery-based Wise Broadband, the Wind Creek Downtown WiFi network will officially launch on April 12 to coincide with the Montgomery Biscuits opening day. Biscuits owner Sherrie Myers provided space in Riverwalk Stadium for Wise Broadband to install and operate the access points needed to launch the network. The company will soon begin installation of additional access points along Commerce Street to bring the total to 20.

“Wind Creek’s free WiFi network is a game changer for the city of Montgomery because it boosts the quality of life downtown and connects us digitally and as a community,” Montgomery Downtown Business Association President Clay McInnis said. “Today cell phone data is at a premium, and we want to give back to the community by adding another amenity to downtown Montgomery and the entertainment district. This is just the beginning of great things to come, and it wouldn’t be possible if all parties didn’t come together to make this happen!”

The announcement came as Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange joined private sector leaders and tech experts for his weekly media briefing. In addition to the free downtown WiFi network, the city announced its adoption of Nextdoor, a Montgomery Bus Boycott-inspired hackathon led by Boyd Stephens and the launch of a new creative and tech hub in Montgomery, Airr on Cottage Hill.
