MONTGOMERY, ALA. – February 27, 2025 – All eyes are on Montgomery as leaders and industry partners celebrate the groundbreaking of the Montgomery Intermodal Container Transfer Facility (ICTF), also known as the Montgomery Inland Port, a transformative project set to drive economic growth across the region and state. Speakers, from Governor Kay Ivey to state and industry officials, highlighted the facility’s future role as a logistics powerhouse; the common theme echoed by all was momentum.
This $94 million investment, made possible through a partnership between the Alabama Port Authority and CSX, is already driving new development and will further enhance freight mobility, streamline supply chains, and expand economic opportunities across the region. Since plans for the Montgomery ICTF were announced in 2022, seven major companies have chosen to locate near the new inland port, collectively investing over $3 billion, developing more than 2 million square feet of space, and creating more than 1,400 new jobs in the capital region.
As we align our efforts with the Alabama Department of Commerce’s Catalyst Strategic Plan for economic growth, Montgomery and the Capital Region are positioned to take full advantage of the opportunities ahead. Through collaboration with state and regional public and private partners, we can drive sustained growth and ensure the Capital Region thrives in this next chapter of economic expansion.
Montgomery’s rapid emergence as a logistics and industrial powerhouse is further reinforced by its recent achievement of dual Gold Level certifications from the CSX Select Site program—making it the only region in Alabama and CSX’s 25-state network to hold this distinction. Combined with the development of the Montgomery ICTF, this achievement positions the region as a pivotal gateway for freight movement, manufacturing expansion, and global commerce connectivity.
The Montgomery ICTF is set to strengthen supply chain infrastructure, enhance efficiencies for manufacturers and distributors, and expand global market access via the Port of Mobile. Strategically located on a 272-acre site with access to Interstate 65, Interstate 85, and Highway 31, the facility sits in Montgomery’s rapidly growing Interstate Industrial Corridor—a hub of significant investment and job creation, with over $8 billion in new and expanding projects within a 10-mile radius. This facility is becoming the logistics hub of the Southeast, supporting the transportation needs of manufacturers, automotive suppliers, and industries that rely on seamless freight movement. Its throughput capacity of 60,000 TEUs per year—effectively 30,000 shipping containers—will provide seamless rail and truck connectivity, driving economic growth across the region.
“With the rapid growth of our industrial sector, Montgomery is emerging as a premier logistics hub for the Southeast—centered around the transformative Montgomery Intermodal Container Transfer Facility,” said Anna Buckalew, President & CEO of the Montgomery Chamber of Commerce. “This investment is already fueling billions in economic development, strengthening our supply chains, and creating new opportunities for businesses to thrive. Strategic public-private partnerships like this are reshaping our region’s future, making Montgomery a critical gateway for global commerce. The leadership of the Alabama Port Authority has been invaluable in this effort, and we are proud of our partnership with this engine driving growth across the state.”
The Montgomery ICTF will operate five days a week, offering express daily service from the Port of Mobile to Alabama’s industrial and automotive corridor. Additionally, the facility will alleviate congestion on major transportation arteries, ensuring a more efficient movement of goods across the southeast. This is a defining investment that will propel economic growth, enhance global connectivity, and solidify Montgomery’s role as a premier logistics hub for generations to come.
