Sold-Out Washington Brief Features U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville
The Montgomery Regional Chamber welcomed a sold-out audience on Monday, August 3, for its latest Washington Brief, featuring U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville. Business leaders, elected officials, military leaders, Chamber members, and community stakeholders gathered to hear firsthand updates on federal priorities, Alabama's economic outlook, and issues impacting the River Region and the state as a whole.
Since beginning his service in the U.S. Senate in 2020, Senator Tuberville has partnered with communities across Alabama to strengthen military installations, support economic growth, and invest in the infrastructure and workforce that keep the state competitive. Known to many Alabamians for his distinguished 40-year career in college football, he now serves on several key Senate committees, including Armed Services, Veterans' Affairs, Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP), and the Senate Special Committee on Aging. Throughout his time in office, he has consistently emphasized the importance of Alabama's Capital City, often reminding audiences that "we are the capital city – everyone has a vested interest in Montgomery."
During the briefing, Senator Tuberville shared an update on current congressional activity while discussing economic development, manufacturing, workforce readiness, infrastructure, agriculture, military investment, and emerging technologies shaping Alabama's future. Throughout his remarks, he emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between federal, state, and local leaders to strengthen Alabama's competitiveness and create opportunities for long-term growth.
A major focus of the discussion centered on economic development and Alabama's ability to attract and retain investment. Senator Tuberville stressed that continued growth depends on communities being prepared to welcome new employers and support long-term investment, saying, "We've got to make sure that people come here and invest. Not only do they come here, but they stay." He also highlighted recent federal investments across Alabama, including military initiatives, transportation infrastructure, manufacturing projects, and continued efforts to position the state for future economic growth.
Recognizing Montgomery's unique role as Alabama's Capital City, Senator Tuberville discussed the importance of investing in the River Region and creating an environment where businesses and families can thrive. He noted, "We have to grow this city. This city is the capital of the State of Alabama. It should be number one," while emphasizing the need for strong infrastructure, safe communities, quality-of-life improvements, and regional collaboration to support long-term economic development.
Education and workforce development were also key topics during the event. In response to audience questions, Senator Tuberville discussed preparing students earlier for career opportunities by strengthening workforce training, expanding partnerships with community colleges, and aligning education with Alabama's growing industries. He emphasized that "We have to start teaching workforce in the 9th and 10th grade," while also pointing to artificial intelligence as a transformational technology that will increasingly shape education, workforce preparation, and the future economy, adding simply, "AI is the future."
Senator Tuberville also highlighted the strategic importance of Maxwell Air Force Base and Gunter Annex, emphasizing their continued role in national defense, military readiness, and the River Region's economy. He reaffirmed his support for continued federal investment in Alabama's military installations, noting, "We need to keep making sure that they have what they need," while recognizing Maxwell as one of the Air Force's most important installations.
The Washington Brief Series continues to provide Chamber members and regional leaders with direct access to elected officials and policymakers while creating opportunities for meaningful conversations about the legislative issues shaping Alabama's business climate and economic future.
