20 Years of Driving Progress: Hyundai Celebrates Two Decades of Manufacturing in Montgomery

Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) is celebrating 20 years of vehicle production in Montgomery this May. Over the past two decades, Hyundai has become a powerful engine for economic growth in the region. Since opening, HMMA has undergone 16 expansions, investing $3.5 billion into its Montgomery operations, and generating a total statewide economic impact of $4.82 billion—including contributions from its network of suppliers.

Since the first Hyundai Sonata rolled off the line in 2005, HMMA has grown into a manufacturing powerhouse. With more than $3 billion invested in plant upgrades and advanced technologies, HMMA continues to evolve, now producing sedans, SUVs, hybrids, and electric vehicles on a single, flexible assembly line. Over the past two decades, the plant has produced more than 6.2 million vehicles and currently averages around 360,000 vehicles each year for the North American market. Its production lineup now includes the Hyundai Santa Fe and Santa Fe Hybrid, Tucson, Santa Cruz, as well as the Genesis GV70 and Electrified GV70.

Hyundai’s footprint in Montgomery has expanded significantly since its early days. What began with 2,000 employees has grown to a workforce of approximately 4,200. In addition, 19,000 indirect jobs have been created, supplier networks have taken root across the state, and entire industries have been revitalized. Hyundai’s presence has helped transform the industrial makeup of Central Alabama, attracting global suppliers and enhancing the state’s reputation as an automotive powerhouse. This impact emphasizes how a global brand, when deeply rooted in its host community, can become a catalyst for long-term prosperity.

Hyundai’s success is built on more than innovation and investment—it's grounded in a deep commitment to its people. That dedication was made even more tangible in February 2025, when HMMA opened its new $14 million Care Center on campus. Designed to enhance the health and well-being of its 4,000 team members, the state-of-the-art facility includes an on-site medical clinic, a physical therapy center, a fitness center, an Emergency Response Team hub, and a team wear store. Strategically located near the general assembly building, the Care Center is more than a health facility—it’s a reflection of HMMA’s belief that investing in people is just as important as investing in production. It stands as a cornerstone of the company’s focus on creating a supportive, people-first workplace culture.

Anna Buckalew, President & CEO of the Montgomery Chamber, emphasized the significance of the milestone: “Hyundai’s arrival in Montgomery not only transformed our regional economy but redefined what’s possible for our community. Their investment, innovation, and commitment to excellence have made them a cornerstone of our economic success over the past 20 years. We’re proud to celebrate this achievement and excited about the future we’re building together.

As part of the month-long celebration, the company recently hosted an exciting event for its team members and their families, featuring carnival rides, games, plant tours, musical entertainment, prize giveaways, and a fireworks display. Though the team celebration has already taken place, HMMA will officially mark its 20th production anniversary on May 20. In honor of the anniversary, Hyundai’s luxury brand, Genesis, gave back to the local community through two generous contributions. Alabama State University received a $50,000 donation from Genesis Gives, the brand’s corporate social responsibility initiative, while the Alabama Shakespeare Festival was awarded a $50,000 grant from the Genesis Inspiration Foundation, supporting education through the arts.

As HMMA looks to the future, the company remains committed to innovation, excellence, and community — values that have shaped the last 20 years and will continue to drive its success for decades to come.

The Montgomery Chamber of Commerce proudly congratulates Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama on an extraordinary 20-year milestone. We are honored to celebrate this legacy of innovation and partnership, and we look forward to continuing our shared journey of growth and success for many years to come.
