The Montgomery Regional Chamber’s 2026 Election Guide serves as a nonpartisan resource to help voters navigate the upcoming primary, runoff (if necessary), and general elections.
As election season continues to evolve, this primary remains an important opportunity for voters to help shape the future of leadership across Alabama and within local communities. Offices appearing on the ballot include Governor, Lt. Governor, State Representatives and Senators, U.S. Senator, Sheriff (Autauga County only) and several additional state and local positions.
Inside this guide, voters will find key election dates, voting details, and sample ballots designed to support informed participation in the electoral process. Decisions made in these races will impact policies and priorities tied to economic growth, infrastructure, workforce development, education, public safety, and overall quality of life throughout the Montgomery region and beyond.
In addition, a special primary election for U.S. Congressional Districts 1, 2, 6, and 7 is scheduled for August 11, 2026.

What to Know Before the 2026 Primary Election

The Primary Election is scheduled for Tuesday, May 19, 2026. Voters will select party nominees for federal, statewide and local races.
To win a primary outright, a candidate must receive the required majority of votes. If no candidate meets that threshold, a runoff election will be held between the top candidates.
A Primary Runoff Election, if necessary, will take place on June 16, 2026.
The General Election is scheduled for November 3, 2026.

Important Election Dates

Primary Election — May 19, 2026
- May 14: Last day to apply for an absentee ballot in person
- May 18: Last day to hand-deliver absentee ballot
- May 19: Absentee ballots returned by mail must be received by noon
Primary Runoff Election (If Necessary) — June 16, 2026- May 29: Last day to hand-deliver voter registration
- June 1: Last day to postmark voter registration forms and register electronically
- June 9: Last day to apply for an absentee ballot by mail
- June 11: Last day to apply for an absentee ballot in person
- June 15: Last day to hand-deliver absentee ballot
- June 16: Absentee ballots returned by mail must be received by noon
Pending court review, Alabama plans to vacate the election results for the 1st, 2nd, 6th and 7th congressional districts after the May 19 primary to allow for the special August primaries if the 2023 map is implemented.
General Election — November 3, 2026- October 19: Voter registration deadline
- October 27: Last day to apply for an absentee ballot by mail
- October 29: Last day to apply for an absentee ballot in person
- November 2: Last day to hand-deliver an absentee ballot
- November 3: Absentee ballots returned by mail must be received by noon
