INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY COMMITTEE

Mission: Preserve and improve the Montgomery area Information Technology (IT) environment in a manner that forms a socially cohesive community providing a strong economic base, while working to postion Montgomery as a globally recognized, premier provider of IT services.

ITC is broken down into three subcommittees for 2006, providing a more focused approach to addressing issues concerning IT and the business community.These subcommittees are Education & Training, Recruitment and Marketing.

Additionally, the IT committe has formed smaller task forces to explore capital formation for start-up companies, such as venture capital or angel investors, through a state-managed venture capital fund or other possible funding sources; and is working to establish an IT Expo to promote IT capabilities within Montgomery.

Air Force Information Technology Conference

The Air Force Information Technology Conference (AFITC) will be held August 12-16, 2007 on the campus of Auburn University Montgomery (AUM). One of Montgomery's largest events, the AFITC will fill a 60,000 square foot pavilion with vendor displays and interactive activities.  Additionally, there will be over 140 professional seminars during the weeklong event, as well as many guest speakers from leading IT industries. Approximately 5,500 people attend the conference each year. The economic impact on the area is estimated to be close to $30 million. Education & Training, Recruitment and Marketing

The Education subcommittee will strive to:

  • Define what types of education and training opportunities are required to support the local IT community (both providers and users); promote those education / training opportunities in Montgomery.
  • Attract training seminars for regional IT firms.
  • Develop education and training partnerships to promote creation of a skilled IT workforce.
  • Work with higher education institutions to update, add and redesign curriculum to improve IT degrees.
  • Promote K-12 Information Technology Awareness.

Current IT workforce development activities:

  • University Partnership with Auburn University and AUM, Troy State
  • University in Montgomery, Alabama State University and Tuskegee University
  • Technical and two year school programs include John Patterson Technical College IT Training program, Trenholm Technical School, AUM Advanced Technology Group Training and Alabama Industrial Training Development
  • Education incentives include the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce's School-to- Career Program and the Brewbaker Technology Magnet High School. IT related academies are Pre-Engineering, Information Technology and E-Business and Finance

The Recruitment subcommittee will work to:

  • Recruit additional and/or expand existing IT businesses to leverage our IT strengths and to fill gaps in our local IT services and infrastructure.
  • Support technology start-ups through the Small Business Incubator.
  • Encourage specialists within the local IT community.
  • Develop a database of capability shortfalls to use in recruiting.

The Marketing subcommittee will:

  • Market the area's IT capabilities throughout the River Region and beyond and promote IT awareness within the local community.
  • Partner with local, state and national organizations to support IT development.
  • Develop a marketing/promotional campaign to highlight Montgomery IT capabilities and infrastructure.
  • Promote opportunities to link IT service providers with IT users to keep IT business within Montgomery.

Capital Formation

  • Conduct a venture capital summit.
  • Identify potential venture capital sources.
