Forbes names Montgomery as one of the Best-Paying High-Tech job locations.
Fast becoming the South's Information Technology
(IT) center, Montgomery boasts more than 135 IT
companies a 25 percent increase in three
years. This $1 billion a year economic impact makes
Montgomery ideal for IT development and expansion.
Today, some 14,000 local people in the private,
federal and state sectors are currently employed
within the IT industry.
Information Technology moved quietly into the Capitol
City in 1971 with the establishment of the Air Force
Data Systems Design Center at Maxwell/Gunter AFB.
Now known as the 754th Electronics Systems Group (ELSG) , this IT assembly, along with the Defense
Information Systems Agency (DISA) today employs
close to 1,800 military and civilian personnel,
plus approximately 600 contractors.
IT growth in the River Region is a major initiative
for the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce. In
1991, The Chamber formed the INFORMATION
TECHNOLOGY COMMITTEE starting with 20 firms.
Today it is composed of more than 120IT firms that
work toward common goals to promote economic growth
within the IT community. The ITC provides a forum
for professional development through interaction
with other IT companies creating an opportunity
to build working relationships. More importantly,
the ITC actively promotes workforce development
by educating today's students for tomorrow's future.
The Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce is actively
involved in community activities promoting Information
Technology, including the Air
Force Information Technology Conference and
Air Force Partnership Days.
An exciting development in 2003 is the development
of an interactive online RFP (Request for Proposal)
site that will allow customers to search for specific
capabilities while allowing IT vendors to post information
about products and services that meet the consumer's
requirements.
