Public Schools, K-12

The Montgomery Public School System consists of all public schools in Montgomery County. There are about 33,500 students in 35 elementary schools, 11 junior/middle schools and eight high schools. In addition to these schools, the system has two non-traditional programs as well as three schools designed to educate the physically and/or mentally impaired. The Montgomery Public School System employs about 4,000. The system is governed by a seven-member elected Board. The Board appoints the superintendent.

To register a child in local public schools, you will need proof of residence, a Social Security card for the child, an Alabama immunization certificate and an official copy of the child's birth certificate. A child must be age 5 (for kindergarten) or 6 (for first grade) on or before September 2.

Private Schools

Montgomery offers a wide variety of private schools, including parochial schools. These educational institutions allow parents to select a curriculum and environment tailored to meet their specific goal for their child's education, including religious instruction, emphasis on the arts, small class sizes, or special education. Higher Education

The Montgomery community is rich with opportunities for higher education as well, offering traditional full-time curriculums as well as adult and continuing education courses, flexible evening classes and graduate-level programs in a variety of disciplines including medicine, law and religion. Montgomerians also have access to alternative two-year college programs and vocational and technical training.
