Camp iMadeit! Recruits Montgomery Public School Students

Camp iMadeiT!, the recruitment camp for Montgomery Public School's Advanced Manufacturing Career Academy, was held March 8. The camp was held a Trenholm State Technical College and AIDT's campuses and introduced more than 300 students and chaperones to the opportunities within manufacturing. Eight local manufacturing companies provided resources and vendor booths in which the students were able to participate in mock simulations of real world applications within manufacturing.

The $1 million Advanced Manufacturing Career Academy is located at Carver High School and includes welding machines and ventilated booths, along with pneumatic and hydraulic training stations. The academy provides students with hands-on, real-life skills for electrical and mechanical engineering; electronics; welding; pneumatics and automobile maintenance careers. The Advanced Manufacturing Career Academy is one of seven Montgomery Public Schools career academies.

Montgomery Area Residential Sales Continue to Increase

According to the Alabama Center for Real Estate, residential sales in Montgomery in February 2013 rose 20.5% from the same period in 2012. This represents a continuation of market momentum for Montgomery as sales in January were 17.9% ahead of last year. The average selling price for homes in Montgomery for February 2013 was $133,504, a 1.5% increase from February 2012's average selling price of $131,512.

Alabama a Fastest Growing Economy

A new economic growth projection by the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia estimates that Alabama's economy will see the second-largest amount of growth among all 50 states over the next six months. The growth index uses two state-specific components (housing permits, initial claims of unemployment insurance) and two national indicators (interest rates on Treasuries, total manufacturing growth). The index estimates that Alabama will see strong growth in employment, wages and manufacturing output over the next six months.

Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama Sets Production Record

Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) produced more than 361,000 vehicles in 2012, a record high for the Montgomery auto assembly plant. The final output tally for 2012 was 361,348 Sonata sedans and Elantra compacts, an increase of 7% over the number of vehicles produced at the plant in 2011. In 2012, HMMA added a third production shift in response to high demand for the Sonata and the Elantra. HMMA began production in 2005 and employs more than 3.100.

Montgomery County Ranks Second in Announced New Jobs from Existing Industries for 2012

According to numbers released by the Alabama Department of Commerce, Montgomery County ranks 2nd among all Alabama counties in announced new jobs resulting from existing industry expansions in 2012. Montgomery County's local industries announced the addition of 1,793 jobs in 2012. Montgomery County ranked 3rd among all Alabama counties in announced new jobs from new and expanding industries. New and Expanded Industries Create 2200+ Jobs in 2012

In 2012, Montgomery area new and expanded industries created 2.234 jobs and more than $181.2 million in capital investment. Companies that announced new facilities in the metro area include: Alabama Media Group, DAS North America, Indrasoft and TK.

Montgomery Area Home Sales up 13%

According to data recently released by the Alabama Center for Real Estate, Montgomery area year-to-date residential sales through November were up 12.8% compared to 2011. November sales also increased by 7.1% from the same period in 2011. The Montgomery area median selling price in November was $123,000, a decrease of 6.8% from last November ($132,000). Chamber Success Starts Here Tour Announces 745 New Jobs

The City of Montgomery, Montgomery County Commission and Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce recently partnered together for the third annual Success Starts here tour. The tour highlighted existing local businesses that have made significant capital investments in 2012. This year, the 13 companies highlighted have made more than $35 million in capital investments creating 745 new jobs collectively. The companies highlighted on the tour include AEP, Alabama Media Group, Glovis Alabama, Glovis America, Hartzell Engine Technologies, Knox Kershaw, Lear Corporation, MOBIS Alabama, Rheem Water Heaters, Rock-Tenn, Sabel Steel Service, United Plastics Recycling and Whitfield Foods. The Success Starts Here tour event won an award at the International Economic Development Council in Houston, TX as one of the top events in the nation.

2,224 jobs and $167.5 in capital investment were created in the Montgomery area by new and expanded industries in 2012.

Montgomery Home Sales Increase

The Montgomery area saw an increase of 19% in the number of homes sold from October 2011 to October 2012, based on data released by the Alabama Center for Real Estate. Over the same period, average days on the market decreased by 21%.

Montgomery area housing costs remain extremely affordable. For the 3rd quarter of 2012, Montgomery's Alabama Housing Affordability Index was 260.3. An AHA Index of 100 indicates that a family can just qualify for a loan on the area's median priced, single-family home. A higher number indicates greater affordability. The median sales price of a home for the same period was $130,417. The AHA Indexes for the larger Alabama metro areas were: Birmingham at 225.5, Huntsville at 234.5 and Mobile at 260.9.

E & I Announces Expansion

E & I Inc., a manufacturer of automotive sealants and adhesives, recently announced a $2 million expansion that will create 20 jobs. This is the company's second expansion since locating in Tallassee in 2004. E & I is a supplier for Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama, Kia Motor Manufacturing Georgia and eight other auto suppliers.

Alabama a Top State for Doing Business

Area Development Magazine ranked Alabama among the top five states for doing business for the third consecutive year. Alabama was also first for competitive labor costs and near the top of the list of its workforce development programs. The rankings are based on a survey of a select group of highly respected location consultants who work with a nationwide client base. The consultants were asked to name their top-5 state choices in 14 site selection categories. Alabama's overall business environment, including its cost of doing business, corporate tax environment, incentives programs, and cooperative state government were also cited among the top five by the responding consultants; and its certified sites and competitive utility rates placed in the top five among the states as well.

Montgomery County Commission Chairman Receives Leadership Award

The International Economic Development Council (IEDC) recently recognized Montgomery County Commission Chairman Elton N. Dean Sr. with the Leadership Award for Public Service. The award is presented to elected officials who have served as committed advocates for economic development in the public sector for at least 10 years and demonstrate effectiveness in mobilizing community and industry leaders to develop programs and projects for new economic activity.

Montgomery Ranks Below National Average in Cost of Doing Business

In the Competitive Alternatives study by KPMG, a leading audit, tax and advisory firm, Montgomery ranks below the national average in cost of doing business with an index of 95.0. In the Shared Services Centers sector (inbound and outbound call centers, business processing centers and centralized administrative centers) the average is an even lower 85.0. Montgomery ranked as one of the lowest cost cities in the U.S. in the following manufacturing sectors: Food Processing, Automotive Parts, Specialty Chemicals, Electronics Assembly, Medical Devices, Metal Machining, Pharmaceuticals, Plastic Products, Precision Components, and Telecom Equipment.

TK Electric LLC to Open $3 Million Facility

TK Electric LLC, a supplier to Hyundai Heavy Industries, will open a new $3 million facility in Pike Road by 2014 to build power transformer parts. The facility will employ 27 people initially with an average salary of $50,000. TK Electric manufacturers electrical control panels and flanges for power transformers. Once at full capacity, the facility will produce about 180 panels and flanges per year.

Advanced Manufacturing Career Academy Now Open

The new state-of-the-art Advanced Manufacturing Career Academy training facility opened this Fall at Carver High School. This 3,500-square-foot, $1 million training facility will provide a curriculum in electrical work, welding, fabrication, pneumatic and hydraulics. With articulations and dual enrollment with two-year institutions, students have an opportunity to complete professional certifications including the American Welding Society Certification (AWS), Certified Electronics Technician Association (CET) and Internal and Computing Core Certification (IC3).

Regitar U.S.A. Celebrates 25 Years

Regitar U.S.A., a manufacturer of auto ignition parts and power tools, recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of the company's Montgomery facility. Regitar has facilities in Brazil, China, Europe and Taiwan. The Montgomery facility is located in Gunter Industrial Park and employs 27.

STERIS Corp. Announces Expansion

Medical manufacturing company STERIS Corp. is expanding its Montgomery operations with an approximately $11 million investment and will hire 80 new employees during a two-year period. The company, which currently employs 300 workers in Montgomery, is bringing fabrication and assembly operations to its Montgomery facility. STERIS manufacturers surgical products, including tables, lights and equipment management systems. STERIS is located in Montgomery's Gunter Industrial Park.

Neptune Technology Group Celebrates 40 Years

Neptune Technology Group recently celebrated 40 years of operation in Tallassee. The international utility systems and metering company held its grand opening on June 28, 1972, with approximately 100 employees for machining, assembly, and testing of its water metering products. Neptune currently employs nearly 500 workers. Neptune was one of the first large-scale manufacturing operations to relocate to Alabama for industry expansion, having moved its headquarters from Long Island City, NY. The company's latest major expansion occurred in 2010, with the grand opening of the Donald J. Kullmann Engineering Center.

Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama Adding 877 Jobs

Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) recently announced plans to add a third shift of production at its Montgomery facility, adding 877 positions. The addition of the third shift will bring the total number of jobs created at the plant to more than 3,000. HMMA's 2012 production capacity will increase by approximately 20,000 units. The Hyundai Sonata and Elantra sedans are produced at the HMMA facility.

Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce Awarded CSX Corporation Partnershipping Award

CSX Corporation has awarded the Montgomery Chamber with its Partnershipping Award in recognition of the Chamber's impact on local economic development by working with CSX to bring rail-related projects to the region. CSX's Partnershipping Award is presented to individuals who display standards of the highest quality; who understand and implement the principles of regional development; and who maintain professional standards of the highest integrity. The Chamber's dedication, expertise and persistence were instrumental to the success of a regional development project. The Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce leveraged its long-standing relationship with CSX to help attract the Hyundai Power Transformers (HYPO) plant to Montgomery, where it is served by CSX's freight rail. The new $108 million Hyundai power plant will bring more than 500 jobs to the region, and generate more than 150 additional high-value carloads annually for CSX.

Local Companies Celebrate Milestones

Alabama Steel Supply, a local manufacturer of metal roofs, recently celebrated its 100-year anniversary. The company has been locally owned for four generations and currently employs 22.

Browder Veneer Works, a local manufacturer of wood products, recently celebrates its 75-year anniversary. The company has been locally owned for three generations and currently employs 40.

Sabic, a local manufacturer of plastic resin, recently celebrated its 25-year anniversary. The company currently employs 315.

Local Company Named Co-Packer of the Year by Pepsi

Whitfield Foods recently received the Contract Manufacturer of the Year Award for excellence in productivity, cost control, quality and customer service from its primary customer, PepsiCo. Whitfield Foods is one of 64 PepsiCo Contract Manufacturers and produces Tropicana, Dole, Lipton, Sobe, Amp Energy, Gatorade and food service juices and drinks.

DAS Corporation to Bring 240 Jobs to Montgomery

DAS Corporation, a Hyundai and Kia parts supplier, has announced that it will build a manufacturing facility in Montgomery, investing $50 million and creating 240 jobs. The company, which manufacturers automotive seat components for vehicles built at the Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia plant, will operate a temporary facility in Interstate Industrial Park. DAS plans to hire 60 employees initially. Once the temporary facility is operational, DAS will build a permanent manufacturing plant in Montgomery Industrial Park, resulting in an additional 180 jobs. DAS North America is headquartered in Kyeong Ju, Korea and has additional plants in Asan, India and China.

According to a recent business location costs study by KPMG, a leading audit, tax and advisory firm, Montgomery ranks below the national average in cost of doing business with an index of 95.0. Montgomery ranks below the national average in all industries surveyed, including a ranking of 85.5 in Corporate Services, 89.3 in Research & Development and 96.2 in Manufacturing. Advanced Manufacturing Career Academy Holds Recruitment Camp

The Montgomery Public School System's Advanced Manufacturing Career Academy recently held its first recruitment camp, Camp iMade iT. More than 200 local eighth graders attended, with over 100 companies participating. Camp iMade iT's purpose is to maximize the Career Academy's enrollment of students with the aptitude and interest in advanced manufacturing.

The Montgomery Public School System operates eight career academies in a variety of fields including Information Technology, Health Science, Business and Finance, Advanced Manufacturing, Hospitality and Tourism, Teaching, Law and Public Safety.

Montgomery-Made Hyundai Elantra is Car of the Year

The Hyundai Elantra, produced in Montgomery, was named Car of the Year at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The car was chosen by a jury of 50 automotive journalists from the U.S. and Canada who based the award on factors including innovation, comfort, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar. the Elantra beat the Volkswagen Passat and Ford Focus.

Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama Breaks Sales and Production Records in 2011

Hyundai's U.S. sales of the Montgomery-made Sonata and Elantra were up 15% and 41%, respectively, in 2011. Production of the two vehicles was up a combined 41.8% in 2011.

During 2011, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama workers built 225,462 Sonatas and 112,665 Elantras, and the vast majority of the vehicles are sold in the U.S. But, about 15% of the plant's output was produced for the Canadian market, and a small fraction goes to Guam and Puerto Rico.

Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama employs 2700. The 2-million-square-foot manufacturing plant resides on 1,744 acres of land and includes a stamping facility, paint shop, vehicle assembly shop, a two-mile test track and an engine shop.

Industrial Site Receives AdvantageSite Designation

Capital Park at Westport has received the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama's AdvantageSite designation. The designation demonstrates that all necessary site documentation critical to the site selection process is complete and the site is ready for prospective industry. Capital Park, a 160-acre industrial site, is located at U.S. Highway 31 and Hyundai Boulevard and is owned by ALFA. There are only 33 sites in the State of Alabama that hold this prestigious designation.

Economic Impact of Hyundai's Montgomery Facility Totals $3.8 Billion in 2010

Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) and its local suppliers generated a total impact of $3.8 billion to the State of Alabama's economy in 2010, accounting for 2% of Alabama's Real Gross Domestic Product. HMMA was responsible for 74%, or $2.8 billion of the total impact. Combined, HMMA and its Tier 1 and 2 suppliers provided direct employment of 11,620 and produced a direct payroll of $419.7 million in 2010.

Hyundai's Stamping and Engine Shops Named Top Plants in North America

The Harbour Report has ranked Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama's stamping shop as the top stamping plant in North America for the third consecutive year. HMMA's engine shop was named as the best engine plant in North America. HMMA is the first plant to ever win more than one award in a single year.

Alabama is Third-Best State for Doing Business

Area Development magazine named Alabama as the third-best state for doing business, based on a survey of site selection consultants. Texas ranked No. 1 and Georgia No. 2. Alabama ranked first in incentives, while its labor costs and worker training programs tied for second.

Montgomery Metro Area Ranks #7 in Economic Growth Potential

Business Facilities magazine has ranked the Montgomery metropolitan area #7 in Economic Growth Potential. This ranking is based on job creation and project development in specific industry sectors along with incentive programs and the availability of a skilled workforce. Inclusion on the top 10 list certifies that a location has a credible strategy for growth, has created the tools/programs needed to implement that strategy and has a proven track record of success with upward momentum.

Montgomery-Made Sonata Named Best-in-Segment

The 2011 Hyundai Sonata, manufactured at Hyundai's Montgomery facility, was recently named Best-in-Segment in Strategic Vision's 2011 Total Quality Index (TQI). The Sonata (tied with the VW Jetta), topped the mid-size car category. The Total Quality Index measures total vehicle satisfaction among new car owners, reflecting not only the quality of the vehicle, but the emotional connection it makes with buyers. The Sonata also topped this year's Strategic Vision Total Value Index, achieving the highest Total Value score in the 14-year history of the study. Hyundai's Montgomery facility recently rolled the 1,00,000th Sonata off of the assembly line.

Montgomery High School Named One of Top High Schools in Country

Montgomery Public Schools' Loveless Academic Magnet Program ranked as the 13th best school in America on Newsweek Magazine's annual list of the 500 best high schools, with only one other Alabama school ranking higher. Loveless Academic Magnet Program has a 100% graduation rate, with 100% of students going on to college.

Montgomery Area Business Confidence Remains Strong

The Montgomery Area Business Confidence Index (ABCI), produced by the Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Alabama, shows that business leaders are optimistic about hiring prospects. ABCI Montgomery indicated forecasted growth in sales, profits, hiring, and capital expenditures.

Groundbreaking Held for Advanced Manufacturing Career Academy

A groundbreaking was held for the Montgomery Public Schools' Advanced Manufacturing Career Academy, scheduled to open January 2012. Montgomery Ranks High in Economic Strength

POLICOM Corporation, an independent economic research firm which specializes in analyzing local and state economies, ranked Montgomery 84th out of the 366 U.S. metro areas in economic strength. POLICOM's 2011 Economic Strength Rankings measured 23 different economic factors over a 20-year period. data from 1990 to 2009 was used for this study.

HMMA Announces Expansion

Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama announced the expansion of its Montgomery engine plant. The expansion will create 214 jobs and $173 million in capital investment. The expansion will allow the production of the Nu engine, which is used in the Montgomery-made Elantra. Currently Elantra engines are imported from Korea. the expansion of the engine plant will also increase HMMA's capacity to produce the Theta engine for the Montgomery-made sonata as well as the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorrento, which are produced at Kia Motor Manufacturing Georgia. After the expansion, the plant is expected to produce 300,000 engines annually.

Montgomery Firms Receive Honors

Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) was named Large Manufacturer of the Year by the Business Council of Alabama, the Alabama Technology Network, the Chamber of Commerce Association of Alabama and the National Association of Manufacturers. Rheem Water Heaters was a finalist in the Large Manufacturer of the Year category while Whitfield Foods was a finalist in the Small Manufacturer of the Year category.

The Alabama Manufacturer of the Year Awards program recognizes business that exhibit excellence in leadership, performance, profitability and workforce relations. HMMA received the Emerging Business of the Year award in 2009.

J & P Khamken Named Subcontractor of the Year

J & P Khamken Industries was named the Southeast Region's Subcontractor of the Year and National Subcontractor of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration. J & P Khamken is a machine ship and manufacturer that produces aerospace and missile equipment. The awards honor small businesses that have provided outstanding goods and services as contractors.

Montgomery County Led State in New Industrial Attraction in 2010

Montgomery County led the State of Alabama in the number of new jobs and capital investment created by new industry in 2010, ranking first among all 67 Alabama counties with the creation of 1,144 jobs and $131,900,000 in capital investment. Montgomery ranked second in capital investment created by new and expanded industries, with $277,600,000 in capital investment.

Montgomery Area Housing Remains Extremely Affordable

For the 4th quarter of 2010, Montgomery's Alabama Housing Affordability Index was 246.6. An AHA Index of 100 indicates that a family can just qualify for a loan on the area's median priced, single-family home. A higher number indicates greater affordability. The median sales price of a home for the same period was $122,617. The AHA Indexes for the larger Alabama metro areas were: Birmingham-Hoover at 214.4, Huntsville at 199.7 and Mobile at 225.0.

Montgomery's Housing Ranks as "Low Risk"

According to recent rankings by Smartmoney.com, Montgomery ranks third out of U.S. cities with low-risk housing markets. Montgomery was the only city in the South on the list. The study was based on research from the PMI Group, a mortgage-insurance and research firm. PMI's risk index uses measures such as economic conditions and family income to predict the direction of home prices.

Texas-Based Acme Brick Co. Purchases Jenkins Brick Co.

Montgomery's Jenkins Brick Company has been purchased by Fort Worth,TX - based Acme Brick Company. Acme Brick Co. was founded in 1852 and acquired by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway in 2000. Acme is the world's largest American-owned brick company and is the only brick company that carries the Good Housekeeping Seal. Jenkins' two Montgomery facilities along with its Moody, AL facility will retain the Jenkins Brick Company name.

Hyundai Heavy Industries Breaks Ground on Montgomery Facility

 Korean-based Hyundai Heavy Industries recently held a groundbreaking event for its new Montgomery manufacturing plant. The facility, Hyundai Power Transformers USA, will be located in Interstate Industrial Park. The facility is scheduled for completion in early 2012 and will employ 1000. The plant will produce industrial transformers that weigh up to 500 tons and are used mostly by utility companies.

Community Newspaper Holdings Inc. to Bring 70 Jobs and Major Media Corporate Headquarters to Montgomery

 Community Newspaper Holdings Inc., a local news media company serving 150 communities in 24 states, recently announced plans to relocate from Birmingham to Montgomery. The privately owned company operates 86 daily newspapers, 46 non-dailies, four television stations and numerous specialty publications in the Midwest, South and East. CNHI will locate its corporate headquarters in the 12-story office building under construction by the Retirement Systems of Alabama on Montgomery's historic Dexter Avenue. The company plans to make the move upon completion of the building, expected sometime late next year or in 2012.

Wells Fargo to Add 20 Jobs in Montgomery

Twenty banking jobs will be created in Montgomery following the merger of Wachovia Bank into Wells Fargo's operational system. Wachovia and Wells Fargo merged in 2008. Wells Fargo will operate 10 Montgomery market banks.

Medline Industries to Build Facility in Prattville

Medline Industries, Inc., an Illinois-based medical supply company, recently announced plans to build a 350,000-square-foot distribution center in Prattville, creating 35 to 40 jobs. Medline provides products and services for the entire medical field, including hospitals, extended-care facilities, surgery centers, commercial laundries, home-care dealers, home-care agencies, physician offices and other alternate-care sites.

Hausted Patient Handling Systems LLC to Call Montgomery Home

Elected leaders and Chamber officials announced that Hausted Patient Handling Systems LLC will spin off into a separate corporation, locating its headquarters in Montgomery and creating 45 jobs.

It is a victory in Montgomery's Imagine a Greater Montgomery strategy to create new jobs and recruit corporate headquarters to the capital city. The company will join Montgomery's growing medical and pharmaceutical base, positioning the company, and the community, for significant growth. Hausted Patient Handling Systems, LLC acquired the Hausted Patient Handling business from Montgomery manufacturer STERIS Corporation. 

Montgomery Area Business Confidence Improves

According to the latest Montgomery Business Confidence Index survey (ABCI Montgomery), local business executives forecast a modest economic expansion across the four-county metro area for the third quarter of 2010. At 51.5, the index passed the neutral level of 50 for the first time in three years. The ABCI Montgomery is produced by The University of Alabama's Center for Business and Economic Research.

Montgomery Ranks High in Economic Strength
