Lowder New Homes Celebrates Auburn University NAHB Student Chapter Launch and Industry Collaboration
January 20, 2026Montgomery, AL – January 21, 2026 – Lowder New Homes is proud to support the launch of the newly established Auburn University student chapter of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), an initiative focused on preparing the next generation of residential construction and development professionals through hands-on learning and industry engagement.
Auburn University’s student chapter is one of NAHB’s newest chapters nationwide, created to strengthen the residential construction workforce by connecting students with real-world experience, professional mentorship, and leadership opportunities. The chapter was established through the leadership of William Rhodes, Vice President for Lowder New Homes and 2025 President of the Greater Montgomery Home Builders Association (GMHBA).
In addition to helping launch the chapter, Sara Heatherly, Vice President of Development at Lowder New Homes, served as the primary instructor for the four-month long course associated with the program, bringing practical industry insight into the classroom and exposing students to real-life development, construction management, and leadership principles.
This program represents one of several educational initiatives and workforce development efforts that GMHBA and Lowder New Homes are partnering on together. Notably, this course is the first of its kind in the region, creating a unique opportunity for students to engage directly with industry professionals in an immersive, real-world learning environment.
“We are proud to recognize William’s leadership in establishing the Auburn University student chapter, along with Sara’s dedication to educating and mentoring students through her role as an instructor,” said Jimmy Rutland, President of Lowder New Homes. “At Lowder, we believe in investing in people and in the future of our industry. Supporting education, mentorship, and workforce development is critical to shaping the next generation of builders who will serve our communities for years to come.”
As part of the program, Auburn University students are also being introduced to the annual NAHB Student Competition, a national event that challenges students to apply classroom knowledge to a real-world construction company scenario. The competition requires teams to develop a comprehensive management proposal and present it to a panel of industry professionals at the International Builders’ Show. These proposals take months of preparation and are rigorously evaluated by experienced builders from across the country.
“Working with these students and preparing them for opportunities like the NAHB Student Competition has been incredibly rewarding,” said Sara Heatherly “Their enthusiasm, creativity, and willingness to take on real-world challenges speaks volumes about the future of our industry. Experiences like this give students confidence and practical knowledge that will serve them well in their careers.”
Lowder New Homes is proud to play an active role in supporting educational partnerships that bridge the gap between classroom learning and professional practice. Through continued involvement with NAHB, GMHBA, and Auburn University, Lowder remains committed to shaping strong, knowledgeable, and passionate leaders for the future of residential construction.
“We are thrilled to see the Auburn University NAHB student chapter come to life,” said Angela Allen, Executive Director of GMHBA. “This initiative strengthens the connection between education and industry and gives students valuable opportunities to prepare for meaningful careers in residential construction.”
