Alabama-built auto sales up 4%, Hyundai Sonata and Elantra are the volume leaders

U.S. sales of Alabama-built autos are up 4% over 2011. The volume leader is the Hyundai Sonata, with 75,716, followed by the Hyundai Elantra, with 61,237 in sales.

The Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce announced that the Hyundai and Kia parts supplier DAS North America is building a manufacturing facility in Montgomery, investing $50 million and creating 240 jobs.

The company, which manufactures automotive seat components, will operate at a temporary facility at the former Graham Packaging building at Interstate Industrial Park.  DAS plans to initially hire 60 employees for the 150,000-square-foot manufacturing facility. After the temporary facility is operational, DAS will build a permanent manufacturing plant at Montgomery Industrial Park, resulting in an additional 180 jobs.

Jeff Davis teacher named to State Teacher of the Year "Sweet 16"

Jeff Davis High School teacher Quebe Bradford has been selected to the Alabama Teacher of the Year Program’s “Sweet 16” list. The list was compiled from applications submitted by elementary and secondary teachers from more than 130 school districts across the state who are competing for the coveted 2012-2013 Alabama Teacher of the Year title.

Montgomery Public Schools graduation rate exceeds the state average
Figures released by the Alabama Department of Education Thursday show that the graduation rate in Montgomery County has surpassed the state average for the 2009-2010 school year. The system’s 88.73 percent graduation rate is the highest in recent memory, is in line with neighboring school systems and better than the state average of 87.62 percent.
