Montgomery Public Schools Lead Alabama

Loveless sits at the top of the class in the U.S.

U.S. News & World Report, one of the nation's leading sources of news analysis and service journalism, has named four Montgomery Public Schools as among America's best.

Loveless Magnet High School was the only school in Alabama named as a Gold Medalist and ranked as the 25th best high school in America. Carver High School, Brewbaker Technology High School, and Booker T. Washington High School were all named as Bronze Medalists.

In spring of 2008, Loveless was named a top 100 school by the magazine, but this fall they have moved into the top 25.

"I can't tell you how pleased I am to see our students' work continued to be recognized nationally," said Loveless Principal Liz Norman. "Making a jump to the top 25 schools in the country reflects the commitment of our teachers, students and parents. It is indeed an honor and all of Montgomery should celebrate."

"I am so proud of our students," said Gary Hall, principal of Carver High School - the only non-magnet school in Montgomery County to make the list of top U.S. schools. "We know what a great education our students get. Now, so does everyone else.  We have exceptional teachers and staff and supportive parents. Our school deserves this honor."

Brewbaker Technology and Booker T. Washington were both recognized last year as Bronze Medal Winners as well.

"I can't stop smiling," said MPS Superintendent John Dilworth. "There are so many wonderful schools in our system and for four of our seven high schools to be recognized as among the best in the United States is an exceptional honor. I am proud of our principals, faculty and staff, our parents and our students."

The second report was Newsweek Magazine’s 2008 list of top high schools. Once again, Henry A. Loveless Academic Magnet High School ranked first in Alabama and 56th in the nation. The report ranks the top 1,300 American high schools every year. This is the fourth straight year Loveless has been recognized as being in the top five percent of all U.S. high schools.

The 2008 public school ranking was based on the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and/or Cambridge tests taken in 2007 by all students at a school, divided by the number of graduating seniors.

“I am pleased our school is listed on Newsweek’s list of the top high schools in America,” said Norman. “Our ranking is a testament not only to the number of students who take and are prepared to take AP exams but, also to the quality of teaching and learning that takes place at the school.”

Montgomery Public Schools is the only one in the River Region that ranked in either of these prestigious reports. One of the four goals of the Chamber’s Imagine a Greater Montgomery strategy is to Champion Public Education. “Not only is quality education important to building a competitive work force, education is key to economic growth and the quality of life in Central Alabama,” said Randy George, president of the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce. “Recruitment efforts are greatly enhanced when we can showcase schools that rank at the top nationally. Businesses want to relocate to communities where their children and their employees’ children can get the best education in the nation.”
